University Support
The NBRC offers support to teacher education programs through links to resources and strategies identified by former members of the Illinois University Alliance. NBCTs and teacher education programs are committed to teacher quality and raising the level of the teaching profession. Two questions may guide understanding and actions of how teacher education programs and NBCTs may partner to impact the learning of teachers at all stages of their development:
- What can NBCTs do for teacher education programs?
- What can teacher education programs do for NBCTs?
The former Illinois NBPTS University Alliance made recommendations for responses to these questions.
Strategies for Teacher Education Programs to Recruit NBPTS Candidates
- Post information on induction websites at teacher education sites to share information with new teachers, mentors, and induction program coordinators to recruit teachers to National Board Certification.
- Disseminate information about awareness sessions, resources, candidate support, and procedures to apply for candidacy could be disseminated through the following at teacher education institutions:
College of Education or Department website
Alumni publications
Blast e-mails to graduates of graduate programs
Communication with administrators and school leaders in school partnerships
(PDS, placement sites for student teachers/clinical students, grant projects, etc.)
- Co-design and deliver a seminar for student teachers in partner schools so NBCTs may share information about student assessment, parents, working with administrators, class management, creative ways to teach, etc.
Strategies for NBCTs to Support Teacher Education Programs
- Place clinical students and student teachers with NBCTs.
- Hire NBCTs as adjunct faculty, particularly retired NBCTs.
- Convene an advisory board of NBCTs for departments, degree programs, etc.
- Identify NBCTs as guest speakers in undergraduate courses. Set up a speakers’ bureau within the individual institution, statewide, or regionally.
Strategies for Teacher Education Programs to Support NBCTs
- Arrange and deliver courses for teacher leadership endorsement or seamless route to administrative certificates or licenses.
- Offer leadership opportunities for NBCTs.
- Link NBCTs to new teacher induction.
- Identify a National Board Certification contact person in each department for teachers, administrators, potential candidates, and NBCTs to contact.
- Identify how ACE credit may be used in degree programs.
- Recruit NBCTs to deliver presentations to principals, department chairs, team leaders, school boards, etc.
- Infuse NBPTS standards and process into Educational Administration courses.
