NBPTS

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) was established in 1987 as an independent and non-profit organization with a teacher majority board. This governing board of directors developed and continues to administer rigorous, high level standards-based National Board Certification (NBC) processes for teachers: first-time candidacy, advanced/retake candidacy and Take One! participation. Those who certify—NBCTs—may renew their National Board Certification in their eighth or ninth year. NBPTS is now piloting the National Board Certification for Educational Leaders (NBCEL).

The Mission of NBPTS is to advance student learning and achievement by establishing the definitive standards and systems for certifying accomplished educators, providing programs and advocating policies that support excellence in teaching and leading, and engaging National Board certified teachers and leaders in that process.
